I believe human needs can be met without destroying our intimately connected web of life, and without dehumanizing others. So many of us are awakening from the lull of materialism and expediency and coming to a new understanding of the social and economic structures at the root
of our current crisis. We must act to slow the damage to our Earth, and cultivate a willingness to accept and lift up each other’s humanity, as we commit to looking deeply and honestly at what blocks us from doing so.

With so much that feels beyond our grasp to repair or even comprehend, we need spaces where we can allow our anguish and vulnerability to be felt and transformed on a visceral level, to reconnect with our mutual belonging to this living universe.

It is only through the heart that real change can emerge, and for me, music is the royal road to the heart. In 2008, I began the non-auditioned Columbia City Community and Family Chorus, to create a safe space to just be human together, in real time, connecting with our own hearts and
with each other through the simple, magical ritual of singing together. When we sing together, we feel—in an embodied, irrefutable way—our connection to something larger than ourselves, something greater than what we can or cannot do. We align ourselves to our truest, deepest
natures, and in the process find renewed clarity of mind and resilience of spirit.
